End of the Year ♥

I wish you all happiness, peace and love for 2010

The monthly challenge of the flickr group La Vuelta al Mundo was Christmas in your city. So I have been shooting quite a lot of christmassy photos in Copenhagen and Vienna. You can see my set for the group here.

Many greetings from Lanzarote where I spend my holidays ...

with a not so good internet connetion and a notebook that goes black from time to time, but with nice warm weather, great food and wine and some good books :-)

Off to warmer temperatures ...

No more glühwein and Christmas markets this year ... we are flying to Lanzarote today to spend Christmas and New Year there and hopefully do some sailing.

I don't know how the internet access is, so just to be on the safe side

HAPPY HOLIDAYS

Shadow Christmas ♥

Spotted in the large trees in front of the Vienna Townhall. I have been meaning to go there in the night to see all the lights and the townhall itself all illuminated ... but it has been so freezing lately that I have found (indoor) things I prefered to do much better.

Happy Sunday and happy holidays.

Illuminated

Last month I took a photo of this hotel - The Ring - when they were putting up all the lights. The other night I was walking on the other side of the Parkring and got a fresh shot.

When you turn around from the hotel you see some of the other Christmas illuminations on Parkring.

Have a great Saturday evening!

Vienna is not white

>

as in Norhtern Europe, but oh so freezing today ...

Vienna has a really good, reliable and quite cheap public transport system compared to many other places I have been to. There is always a tram, a bus, metro or train to take you where you need to go ... and they are heated. The best ones when it is cold are the old trams with the wooden seats where you can feel the heat coming up from the heaters than run along the floors :-)

Corner view Vienna: Books

Here is a view to our books waiting to be read or inspired by here in Vienna.

Actually, the one I am reading now, Sea of Poppies (1st book of a triology) by Amitav Ghosh, is not on the photo. I have been reading it for ages, but I am now on p. 227 (of 530) and it is slowly getting more interesting ...

I am also getting quite hooked on audiobooks and have listened to all the The No.1 Ladies' Detective Agency books. Great books listening to while doing something else :-)

Oh, and I also subscribe to DR Læseklubber (Denmark's Radio bookclubs) where you can sometimes download books in Danish as podcasts a.o.

Christmas globes

In Copenhagen I was fascinated by the cool climate globes. 7 of my globe photos are featured in YES! magazine.

Back in Vienna I saw these ones hanging in one of the shopping streets in the centre of Vienna. Here is a day and a night one.

Christmas stuff

The photos above are from my parents home. Every December they decorate it very nicely .

The (according to myself, and not my husband) very few Christmas decorations we have, are in a box in our basement room in Málaga. So, for just a little bit of Christmas atmosphere here in Vienna we have some orange pomanders lying around (I love the smell) and some big candles for the cold and dark evenings.

Elf on the shelf

This little Christmas elf shows up every year behind the shadows of the ceramic ware in my parent's kitchen.

Happy Sunday.

Copenhagen days

The square in front of the Royal Ballet in Copenhagen if not in its usual Christmas mood. Other years, the square has been turned into an ice skating field.

The climate conference starts on Monday and the city is full of globes and posters about climate issues.

Corner view Vienna: Corners of my home

These are glimpses of my temporary home in Vienna of the little things that make it a little more like home to us: DVDs and being able to make coffee and tea as we like it, fresh flowers or in this case ilex, fragrances, a little home cooking, and books. Looking out out of the window - there are usually three scooters parked there, but not always the same ones.

First day of December

These shots are from the square in front to Vienna's townhall last Sunday afternoon. The windows of the Townhall are turned into a Christmas calendar.

I won't be able to see what's hiding behind the first doors before next week as I am of for Copenhagen now to see my kids :-)

November gone ...

I am member of a flickr group La Vuelta al Mundo that every month has a photograhpy challenge and blog about it the last day of the month. This month the group has been doing Still life photos.

Below is a selection of the ones I have been making. I must say it has been hard work as this genre is completely new to me. It has also been fun and quite a learing process: I got to know my camara a lot better (Panasonic DMC-FZ28), the photo editor Gimp (I am staying in Vienna this month and I don't have photoshop on my notebook) and I got to play with textures.

If you like still life photographs take a look at the group page where you can find many beautiful and creative photos.

Afternoon sun

It is 3:40 pm. On a sunny day the area around Südbahnhof, one of Vienna's main train stations, can look quite nice with the dusty colored rosy and yellowish buildings facing the station and receiving the afternoon sun. On a rainy misty day it just looks like something out of a really sad movie from the fifties.

There is a lot of construction going in the area as the station is going to be transformed into Viennas main train station in a couple of years.

Here is a corner of the inside of the old station. In the shadow of the ticket vending machines a guy is having problems getting his ticket, I think.

Happy Sunday.

Corner view Vienna: Today's menu

This week's theme is "menu al día" - if you were to take us to a typical restaurant in your town, what would we find on the menu?

Well, I have only been to a typical restautant here a few times, but I guess schnitzel of some kind will be on the menu. It is usually a very large thin piece of pork or veal meat with some vegetables and potatoes.

This  restaurant it not typical Vienese, but on the other hand it is because there are so many different etnic restaurants here. And a lot of them have a Today's menu. This menu suggests meat and vegetables with bulgur and something else I don't understand, yet :-)

Anyhow, this week I am sure we will try some different food as we have family visiting.  So, I am actually quite busy and will probably not be able to look at other corner view menus around the world before the weekend.

More Vienna by night

Two more shots from my walk to school. The first one is the facade of a hotel getting the Christmas lights up. The other one is of the State Opera. On the roof there is huge banner advertising for Opera for children. I have not been to an Opera yet so maybe I should start with one recommended for kids :-)

Have a great weekend.

November evenings

I have signed up for an intensive German conversation course, so two nights a week I walk along this street to the school on Opernring. It was really misty, but the lights and all the dry leaves made it look so pretty.

We don't know yet for sure how long time we will stay in Vienna, but so far until February next year. Anyhow, it is quite good with a brush up (kick in a certain bodypart) to start saying something in German ...

Weekend over ...

but is has been a nice relaxing one with walks in streets and parks and visiting a few markets.

As mentioned Friday we went to the movies to see Antichrist by Lars von Trier. And, oh, I don't know what to say about the film. It is not one that you forget easily. The film was amzaingly beautiful, but the story so scary. Scary in the way Repulsion by Roman Polanski was scary, if you know that one.

Friday, 13 November 2009

Happy Friday

Sun is shining right now after some days with rain ... it's time for a walk.

Tonight is movie time. I found a cinema that is showing Antichrist by Lars von Trier... I don't know so much about the movie, but it is in English (with German subtitles) and it is supposed to be scary. Wonder how much of it will actually see :-)

Have a wonderful weekend.

Corner view Vienna: Favourite dish

I love sushi ...
and this is one of the dishes I do not want to learn to make at home. I have not yet found the place to have sushi in Vienna, but I have seen a few I would like to try out ...

New neighbourhood

I'm back in Vienna again and this weekend we explored our new neighbourhood - Vienna's 3rd district.

The photos above are from the Belvedere Castle and Park which is right around our corner. The autumn colors are so beautiful right now.

Corner view Málaga: Contrasts

The theme for this Wednesday corner view is contrasts. I think that I have been showing you quite many pretty photos of my corner.

This time I will show you a contrast to all the prettyness.

This one I call Garbage with a View ... and it's taken on one of the back roads leading down to the sea  from my place.

You can actually have a rest halfway down ... or up.

In urbanised areas owners are paying for the garbage removal trough their taxes. Here there are garbage containers, and it is also possible to separate some of the garbage. Large garbage, like sofas or matrasses or televisions you usually place next to these containers and then with regular intervals it is removed by the townhall. In between garbage collections it can be quite messy and smelly.

Actually, I do not know if there are garbage dumps for the public around here as I am used to from Denmark. If you are interested, you can jump over to Julochka's post An organized mess to see how the dumps work in Denmark.

For more views on contrasts, head over to Spain Daily or find the links on this page's siderbar.
